This album was written in Aomori, Japan.
In the small town of Ajigisawa, nestled on the side of Mount Iwaki, there is a wonderful ski area and hotel. I was lucky enough to spend a winter there.
The 404 Sessions. I wrote these songs to document my experiences working there. It was also a sanity check, as there were very few english speakers. While the hotel was closed for renovations, I used room 404 as a refuge and makeshift recording studio. This is my first attempt of making anything along the lines of an “album”, so I definitely learned a lot. Besides, my mom told me to do it. Hope you like it, spread the love!
I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email or fill out the contact form! Arigatōgozaimashita!
The sun has just arisen
The snow is still falling
I get up from my eggshell room
Make myself some cereal
And I use the whole bag
Say what you will, I’ve got nothing to prove
Put on a dress shirt and pants
And yet still I’m out dressed
By the white dog at the foot of my stairs
And as I head up the mountain
I think of vending machines
Selling cold beer, hot meals and underwear
At Aomori Spring we wear
Fine suits and slippers
Could you kindly please Keep your ski boots by the door
We’ve got sake at the bar
And yukatas in the laundry
Sorry if this all sounds new
And if you head down the road
You’ll find a place you can gamble
But it’s awfully loud and the lights make things hard to see
And instead of playing blackjack
You’re popping rain bow bubbles
They keep flashing at you from an LED screen
So hop on a lift and hear the
jPop-a-rumble
See kids whip by dressed like hello kitty
But please don’t end your day till you’ve
cracked into those slippers
It’s silly but it’s advice you have to heed
At Aomori Spring we wear
Fine suits and slippers
Could you kindly please keep your ski boots by the door
I’ll meet you in the lobby
Looking sharp, How could I not be
Ironed shirt, but I won’t be wearing dress shoes
Walk around like I’m in the clouds
Aomori Spring
Take my dirty shoes
Cuz they have no use
I’m got my suits
I’ll wear your slippers
Aomori Spring
You say hello
But all I hear is strange sounds
New noises
So hard to decipher
Got me pacing around
I just want to talk to you
Wanna tell you everything that’s been going on in my mind
But every time I open my big dumb mouth
Well, the wrong words come out
It’s just me and my foreign tongue
I don’t know how to get a new one
So I play the music
Let’s have some fun
It’s just me and my foreign tongue
And all my thoughts are just babbles
Everything around me just feels like white noise
Words are just words
Coming at me and they’re leaving me tongue-tied
It’s just me and my foreign tongue
I don’t know how to get a new one
So I play the music
Let’s have some fun
It’s just me and my foreign tongue
You said something
I didn’t understand
Now I’m waiting doing nothing
This wasn’t part of the plan
And I’m still here
Don’t you remember my face
I saw you just this morning
Then I stepped out the door and into space
Room 404
Empty corridors
Why am I here?
What’s all this for?
Where do we go?
I don’t want to start no war
404
404
You may be king of the castle
I’ve got my 4 star cell
I don’t wanna be a hassle
If you need me just ring the bell
Cause I’m still here
Don’t you remember my face
I saw you just this morning
Then I stepped out the door and into space
Room 404
Empty corridors
Lost power tools
On the carpeted floor
Where do we go?
Nothing never more
404
404
Can’t you see there’s nothing to be done
Hop in through the portal
Stare at snow reflected sun
Time slows down
Just say the magic words
Singing 404 won’t you take the dull away?
Wind licks my face,
It lingers in my ears,
My moped spits a storm,
Cuts through pavement with it’s gears
The high arc in the back,
It’s full of power,
Inside, lazy energy hangs from the air,
Am I melting,
No I think I’ll be just fine,
Melting’s for watery witches,
And their dissolvable stitches in the Onsen
Baths of different stages of life,
Come out of the ground,
Join them and rejoin my roots,
To that swollen sound
Is this working,
Can’t the steam clean out my mind,
When I stand, my head’s in the clouds
Eyes dark as space,
Ears blacked out,
Onsen
Wheels scurry up a sound,
Metal buried in the ground
Lending guidance
Tumbling towers can never contain their excitement
Follow their way
I’ll keep things going
Until you come back down
The crows are on the other side of town
The sunny side of town
Come meet me down in Shinjuku station
The sudden sound of the night’s so loud
And the sake in the cracked glass reflects the ceiling fan
Tainted windows adorn the derelict caravan
Let’s follow their way
And wander round wanderlust crowd
It’s rowdy but it’s one
Until you come back down
The crows are on the other side of town
Keep staring at my hands
Can’t help but shake
When you’re drifting off your path
No ground to offer up a break
But I’ve got to get on going
Avoid the rising sun
One foot and then the other
It’s hard to walk when you’d rather run
And if you’ll take me through the air
Across some land and through the sea
From the snow into the sun
There’s no place that I’d rather be
And if I close my eyes, hold my breath and count to 3
There’s a great big garden looking back at me
I wish it were that easy
…
Singapore,
Trees rise from the ocean floor
Are they real or are they from the store?
It’s all the same
On a man-made shore,
Far away from 404,
There’s a guy on a hoverboard
Must be an island thing
Singapore,
Feel the AC coming through the door
The hottest winters in the whole wide world
’til I get on that plane
…
Singapore, Singapore, Singapore, Singapore, sing about Singapore, meet me there, oh yeah
Singapore, Singapore, Singapore, Singapore, sing about Singapore, meet me there, oh yeah
Karaoke,
Could you play me another song
Could you make it catchy?
And nice and loud so I can sing along
Sometimes it feels like I’m just running in circles,
And right now I can’t walk straight
But I can still stand, got a bottle and a mic in each hand
And every song that comes on is my favorite band
And I don’t even know all the words
Doo doo doo
Karaoke,
Could you take me to another place?
My throat is scratchy
And right now I can’t feel my face
Play me a new one
Dear Karaoke,
I come to you as a drunken hurricane,
You are the eye of my storm,
The flickering lantern in a dark and smelly room,
Most of your songs are in strange languages that I can never even hope to understand
But I hold true to you anyway
All of my friends that I came in with are either gone or asleep
But not me
I’ve already gone through your list of red hot chili peppers songs like 40 times
But I’ll go through it 40 more,
And one day I’ll get that high score
Karaoke,
Could you play me just another song
My minds been racing,
I’ve been thinking of you all day long
You’re my Karaoke
Could you carry me, Karaoke
And I care for you, Karaoke
